The soft clump-clump of footsteps and the jangle of a key ring ripped Michelle from her failed attempt at meditation. After scrabbling around the holding cell, searching desperately for a structural weakness, she’d given up hope of breaking out of the building. Not that she believed she’d had a chance in the first place.

Fists balled at her sides, Michelle stood rooted to the spot as a man’s shadow grew nearer. If she was about to face down her doom, then she’d do it with her head up and not cowering in a corner.

She was done with that.

As Deputy Cornell emerged in front of the holding cell, a ray of hope threatened to crack Michelle’s armored exterior.

With his slick, salt-and-pepper haircut, kind brown eyes, and reassuring smile bracketed by years’ worth of laugh lines, Rory Cornell didn’t look like the type of man to drag Michelle back to a psychopath like Brian Kolthoff.

They never did.

Monsters didn’t sport horns or pointed tails, nor were their intentions immediately visible in their faces. In Michelle’s world, the worst monsters wore custom-tailored suits, smiled easily, and offered charming responses to questions.

Some monsters even carried a gun and badge.

Michelle wouldn’t let Deputy Cornell’s soccer dad appearance chip away at her carefully crafted shell.

“There are a couple of FBI agents here to pick you up.” Metal clattered as the deputy unlocked Michelle’s cell. “They drove all the way here from Chicago.”

Flexing her hands at her sides, Michelle maintained a neutral expression.

Chicago. The same office where Joseph Larson worked. The same city where Michelle had been stupid enough to follow Joseph to a so-called fundraiser hosted by Brian Kolthoff. Kolthoff was another Chicago native, and of course, so was Stan Young.

Journey had told her she was on the way, but she hadn’t specified where she’d been. Or had she and Michelle’s panicked brain had blocked it out?

Part of her wanted to turn around and cram herself into the corner of the holding cell. She’d rather spend the rest of her life in the Henry County Sheriff’s Department than go back with Brian or one of his goons.

Perhaps if she stayed here long enough, she would simply meld with the wall and become a permanent fixture of the holding cell.

“Come on. Your sister is waiting for you.” Deputy Cornell’s voice was calm, like the sort of reassurance Michelle’s own father had given her when she was a little girl.

For the second time, Michelle almost lost her footing over the treacherous cliff that was hope.

Your sister is waiting for you.

Clenching her jaw, Michelle forced one foot in front of the other. The fabric of her too-large, stolen khakis swished quietly as she followed Deputy Cornell down a drab hall. As he shoved open a heavy, metal door to the check-in area, Michelle’s legs nearly buckled.

The woman who stood at the end of the clerk’s desk wasn’t Journey.

Vaguely familiar, yes. But definitely not her sister.

Where had she seen this person?

The forest green of the woman’s eyes was far different from Journey’s indigo orbs.
